Starting out as the first Authorized Cannabis Store in the North Bay region, Kana Leaf continues to blossom. Right near scenic Duchesnay Falls and offering beautiful views of Lake Nipissing, Kana Leaf stands out as the first dispensary in North Bay and the first legal cannabis shop on First Nations land in Ontario. Established in 2020, this Authorized Cannabis Store isn’t just a place to grab legal cannabis — it’s a pillar of the community and a symbol of resilience and dedication.

Owned by Garnet, Garet and Curtis Avery, and Noreen Nichol — all family and members of the Nipissing First Nation — Kana Leaf represents the rich cultural heritage and strong community ties of its owners. Garet Avery, a retired sergeant who served in Afghanistan with the Canadian Armed Forces and was awarded the Medal of Bravery in 2015, brings a unique perspective and commitment to the store’s operations.

Nichol highlights how deeply involved she and the other owners are in the daily operations. “Garet manages the Ottawa store on Richmond Road, while I oversee the North Bay location. Curtis is our compliance administrator, ensuring we adhere to all regulations, and Garnet maintains our properties. We are always looking for ways to give back to our community, whether in Ottawa, North Bay or the surrounding areas of Nipissing First Nation."

One of the ways Kana Leaf gives back to the public is by spearheading fundraising initiatives to support local families in need. “We have raised money for the NFN Food Bank, the Children's Christmas Toy Drive in North Bay, the Women's Lodge and Water First,” Nichol shares.

On top of these efforts, Kana Leaf hosts the annual Kana Expo, a unique outdoor event in Northern Ontario that brings together Licensed Producers (LPs) and passionate consumers. The expo gives the public the opportunity to dive into the heart of cannabis culture, offering a unique blend of education, connection and celebration. “There’s nothing like talking face-to-face with Licensed Producers to learn more about your favourite products,” says Nichol. The event continues to grow, adding more LPs every year, and is a highlight for local cannabis connoisseurs.

For those looking to stock up for a long weekend, Nichol recommends indulging in popular products like MOD THC Drops 1000, or their selection of blunts, which offer great value for the price. “With so many amazing products and producers, our recommendations are always tailored to the individual customer's preferences.”
