What is Pink Kush?

Pink Kush is an indica-dominant strain known for its sweet aromas and pink or purple pistils, hairs that offer colourful contrast to the dark green of its dense buds. Like other indicas, Pink Kush plants are short and stocky. Although they tend to take their time flowering, the payoff is a bountiful yield of high-THC buds.

History of Pink Kush

It’s tough to trace Pink Kush’s lineage, but the strain, or cultivar, is widely believed to be an offspring or relative of OG Kush. Popular lore tells us that Pink Kush was first bred in Amsterdam before reaching North America, where it quickly became a West Coast staple.

Kush strains are bushy, resilient, indica-dominant plants believed to descend from Hindu Kush, a “landrace” — or original, naturally occurring — strain.

Pink Kush strain characteristics

Like any cannabis plant, Pink Kush’s traits can vary between growers, producers and batches. That said, all varieties of Pink Kush do share some characteristics:

  • high in THC
  • indica-dominant
  • resinous trichomes

Potential effects of Pink Kush

Cannabis affects everyone differently, regardless of strain. Nevertheless, Pink Kush tends to be potent, and its high THC levels can be intoxicating to beginners and experienced cannabis consumers alike. Keep this in mind before consuming, knowing that there can be negative mental health associations with consuming high-THC products in some people with a family history of mental health issues.

The short-term effects of consuming cannabis can include:

  • euphoria
  • heightened senses
  • confusion; trouble with memory and/or concentration
  • panic, restlessness, anxiety or fear
  • loss of motivation or inhibition
  • changes to blood pressure or heart rate
  • increased appetite

How cannabis will affect you depends on a range of factors beyond the strain, including dose, method of consumption, your personal health history, daily habits and more.

Growing Pink Kush

Growers will be happy to hear that Pink Kush is a robust plant and relatively pest resistant. It’s well-suited to compact environments with good temperature control. To get those signature pink pistils, you must maintain consistent growing temperatures and, more importantly, choose the right seeds, because genetics have the most influence here.

Climate: Pink Kush plants fare best in warm, dry climates, with temperatures between 21ºC and 27ºC during the day and above 10ºC at night. Although Pink Kush plants are quite hardy, mould can become an issue if humidity levels exceed 40% during the flowering stage. This strain is well-suited for indoor cultivation, with climate controls for ideal temperature and humidity levels.

Height and growing time: Pink Kush is known for its compact size and dense growth, typically not exceeding more than a metre. This makes it a great contender for growing at home or in confined spaces. At 10 to 12 weeks, this strain’s flowering time is a little longer than other strains but well worth the wait.

Yield: Despite its smaller stature, at harvest Pink Kush still yields an impressive amount of bud, indoors and out, at approximately 600 to 700 grams per square metre. Pruning — or removing leaves and dead stems — isn’t required, but it is an effective technique for increasing yield. During vegetation, pruning exposes smaller buds to light and encourages strong, short stems. This ultimately leads to larger and more numerous, uniform buds.

What are some strains like Pink Kush?

If you enjoy Pink Kush, you may be looking for strains with similar traits or genetics. Since Pink Kush has uncertain parentage, you could explore strains that have Pink Kush as a parent. Also look to other Kush cultivars or, more generally, indica-dominant cultivars with high myrcene content. Having a positive experience with one strain doesn’t guarantee that related or similar strains will feel the same, but it can be an interesting framework for discovery.

If you like Pink Kush, here are some strains you may want to learn about.

OG Kush: Although we can’t say for sure, OG Kush is believed to be one of Pink Kush’s parent strains, offering a blend of earthy and citrusy flavours and high THC potency.

Pink Bubba: Pink Bubba is an indica-dominant cross between Pink Kush and Bubba Kush. Where Pink Kush boasts a sweet, dessert-like profile, Pink Bubba brings aromas of earth and pine.

Pink Diesel: As the name suggests, Pink Diesel is a cross between Pink Kush and sativa-dominant Driftwood Diesel. Diesel contributes a gassy aroma to the strain’s profile, alongside notes of lavender and spice.

Cold Creek Kush: This fellow Kush strain is also potent and myrcene heavy, with sour, piney flavours and forest aromas.

Will I like Pink Kush?

Pink Kush is a good option if you like nuanced, complex flavours and high THC potency. As with any type of cannabis — and especially when you’re trying a new strain with high THC levels like this one — it’s a good idea to start low and go slow.
