You might be thinking about picking up a few cannabis beverages for your next social gathering but may not know where to start. How do beverages compare to other cannabis products? What should you look for when buying a cannabis beverage? We spoke with budtenders from HighLife, Chamba Cannabis Co. and Fika Cannabis to get some advice on how to have the best experience with beverages and to gather tips on products so you can shop with confidence.

What types of cannabis beverages are on the market?

Thanks to the many innovative brands producing cannabis products today, you can choose from a large variety of cannabis beverages. Felicia Fahey, owner and budtender at HighLife, lists some options, which include “coffee, tea, hot chocolate, iced tea, sodas, beer-type drinks, ciders, rapid shots, sparkling water in all kinds of flavours, as well as powders to add to your [non-infused beverage of choice].”

How are cannabis beverages made?

To make cannabis beverages, producers need to infuse their product with a cannabis extract or concentrate. Since cannabis is an oil, and therefore not water soluble, the two need to be emulsified to create a smooth and consistent finished product. A cannabis distillate must first be combined with a carrier oil. That mixture is then nano-emulsified, helping turn the cannabis distillate into water-friendly particles. Finally, selected terpenes are added to the cannabis emulsion to create the finished product.

Will I enjoy a cannabis beverage?

Beverages are a great option for every type of consumer, with appropriate dosing levels for all tolerance types. Kyle Loder says, “Cannabis beverages come in a wide variety of [doses] that range from 1 mg to 10 mg THC or CBD per serving. These options cover anyone looking for high- to low-dose strengths.” He also believes they’re “a great smoke-free alternative for consumers who may have only tried more traditional edibles such as gummies and chocolates.”

Fahey loves cannabis beverages for anyone “that is entertaining or heading to an event,” noting that if a consumer is interested in low-sugar options, many brands offer spritzers. Joshua McGinnis, budtender at Fika Cannabis, recommends mocktail-inspired beverages to consumers who are “looking for non-alcoholic beverage options at social events that are easy and subtle.”

What would you recommend for a new consumer versus an experienced one?

“I find it extremely important to understand the consumer’s previous experiences with cannabis and cannabis beverages,” says McGinnis, who recommends seeking out CBD-dominant beverages with less than 10 mg THC. Experienced consumers also have a wide variety of 10 mg THC options. Fahey encourages new users to “start low and go slow.”

When are cannabis beverages the right pick?

Going to the cottage? Consider stocking up on a variety of options. “Everyone has their own taste palate and preferences, so my suggestion is always to get a mixed six- or eight-pack and try out a few,” says Fahey. Loder believes that “cannabis beverages are great for adult social settings. With the available [potency] ranges, a person can find the right beverage blend which enables them to have multiple servings over an event,” all while reducing the risk of overconsuming.

For other occasions, such as a day at the beach, going to a BBQ or just enjoying a day off, “a cannabis drink provides a low-key and simple way to have an elevated experience at a [social] gathering,” says McGinnis.

What safety tips should I keep in mind when consuming cannabis beverages?

Fahey has advice to set you up for success: “Tips for a [positive experience] always include ‘start slow’ and ‘give it time.’ Let the drink have time to work into your system before you have another. And avoid mixing cannabis with alcohol. Lastly, remember to never consume and drive.”

McGinnis further suggests “waiting up to two hours to experience the full effects, and considering purchasing drinks with a resealable cap.” If you’re travelling with your beverages, Loder offers this reminder: “Always keep them stored in the trunk away from the driver and passengers.”
