It all starts with intention at AlphaBud Cannabis Company. In Toronto’s Woodbine Heights, in northeast Toronto, Emmanuel Chinweokwu set out to create more than just a place to buy cannabis. The store’s founder and head of operations aspired to help make the cannabis industry more inclusive while creating a space where customers feel comfortable exploring the plant.

“I didn’t just want to open a store,” Chinweokwu explains. “I wanted to create a different kind of retail experience that is centred on education, trust and comfort. The goal was simple: Create a space where anyone, even someone like my own mother with no prior connection to cannabis, could walk in, feel at ease and leave with a better understanding.”
That vision is personal. As a Black entrepreneur in the cannabis sector, Chinweokwu sees representation as essential to the industry’s future. “I want to help build an industry that’s inclusive and truly reflective of the communities it serves,” he says. “Representation matters.”
That commitment to building a more inclusive cannabis industry carries through every part of the customer experience at AlphaBud. Conversations take priority over transactions, with the store's budtenders taking time to understand each customer’s needs and guide them thoughtfully. The result, Chinweokwu says, is a high-trust environment where asking questions feels natural.
For newer cannabis consumers and older adults especially, that kind of guidance can really make a difference. Many come in feeling unsure, often influenced by limited or outdated information. Instead of keeping things basic, the team takes the time to explain which factors shape the experience of using cannabis, from terpenes to how long products take to kick in to the different formats available. It all helps customers feel more confident with each visit.
That same care goes into choosing the products on the shelves. Chinweokwu builds the store’s menu based on quality, consistency, price and customer feedback. Reliable favourites are always there, and new products are added thoughtfully.

“ I want to help build an industry that’s inclusive and truly reflective of the communities it serves. Representation matters. ”
The store itself reflects that balance. Interactive displays and digital kiosks invite shoppers to explore, while a cannabinoid reference table offers a clearer understanding of how different compounds can contribute to the overall experience.
Cannabis education also plays an important role in pushing back on one of the biggest myths in the industry: THC potency is the most important factor when choosing a product.
“One of the biggest misconceptions is that higher THC automatically means a better or stronger product,” Chinweokwu says. “In reality, factors like terpene profile, freshness and overall quality play a much bigger role in shaping the experience.”
At AlphaBud, these conversations happen every day. Customers are guided beyond potency toward a better understanding of how a product could potentially make them feel.

Chinweokwu has noticed a growing interest in terpene-rich craft flower, solventless products and options that offer consistent, predictable effects. At the same time, awareness of minor cannabinoids — like CBG, CBN and CBC — is on the rise, helping people take a more personalized and informed approach to cannabis. “It’s exciting to see the conversation shift from chasing THC potency to appreciating the full spectrum of what makes cannabis truly exceptional,” he says.
Fostering that type of open dialogue with customers starts with a carefully chosen team. At AlphaBud, communication, curiosity and a genuine desire to help matter just as much as a budtender’s technical expertise. Their goal? To create an environment where every customer feels supported, never intimidated.
“We regularly hear feedback about how approachable and knowledgeable the team is, and how comfortable customers feel asking questions. That level of connection is something we take a lot of pride in.”
That people-first mindset is reflective of Woodbine Heights itself. Looking ahead, the focus stays the same. Count on AlphaBud to remain a community-rooted space where people can learn about cannabis.
