We know shopping local matters to Ontario cannabis consumers. That‘s why we are establishing the Ontario Grown badge, helping adult Ontarians easily find locally grown cannabis.
When you choose cannabis grown in Ontario, you’re supporting local communities, skilled growers and a strong legal cannabis industry.
There’s a wide selection to explore, from small-batch craft flower to products produced at large-scale operations.
What is Ontario grown cannabis?
Ontario grown cannabis is cultivated right here in the province by Licensed Producers who, like those in other provinces, follow strict quality and safety regulations. These Producers use innovative and regulated growing methods to bring high-quality cannabis to market.
To be labelled as “Ontario Grown,” at least 75% of the cannabis used in dried flower and non-infused pre-rolls must be cultivated in Ontario.
Ontario is also home to many LPs who take a small-batch, artisanal approach to growing. At the OCS, the resulting product is considered craft cannabis.
What is craft cannabis?
Craft cannabis is produced with a focus on hand-tended production. At the OCS, we define craft cannabis as dried flower that’s been hang-dried, hand-trimmed, hand-packaged and grown in small batches.
A sampling of the types of legal craft cannabis products available in Ontario:
- craft indica, sativa and hybrid dried flower
- high-THC craft
- balanced craft
- low-THC craft
- bulk craft
- craft pre-rolls
- craft milled flower
- craft concentrates
How is cannabis grown in Ontario?
Ontario growers use various methods to cultivate cannabis, from high-tech indoor grows to outdoor farms and hybrid techniques in between. Many craft producers focus on sustainability and hand-processing to ensure premium quality.
These are some of the types of growing techniques — LPs may use one method or a hybrid.
- Indoor cultivation: Cannabis is grown in an enclosed space where the light, humidity, growing medium, water and nutrients are strictly controlled.
- Greenhouse growing: Plants are exposed to natural light with otherwise controlled conditions in a space with transparent walls and roof.
- Outdoor cultivation: Cannabis is grown outdoors in full sunlight, either in pots or directly in the soil.
